McClung Museum Of Natural History & Culture

The McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture in Knoxville is dedicated to the study and interpretation of the natural and cultural history of Tennessee and the region. The museum is home to over 1.2 million objects and specimens, which are used to teach and research the natural and cultural history of Tennessee, the United States, and the world.

In 1933, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was created, which led to the establishment of a centralized university museum. Representatives from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the University of Tennessee, the University of Alabama, and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History met in December to discuss how to preserve archaeological resources that would be flooded by reservoirs. They planned investigations to retrieve and protect these resources.

The McClung Museum was officially dedicated on June 1, 1963. However, its history actually extends back to an earlier date. On March 1, 2013, the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees voted to extradite the authentic call of the museum to the Frank H. McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture. The new call enables to extra virtually outline the styles of collections housed with inside the museum, at the same time nonetheless paying tribute to the McClung's own circle of relatives' legacy.

The University of Tennessee first established a museum in the Agricultural Building, which was also known as Morrill Hall. The building was renamed Carrick Hall in 1908. This building used to be an agricultural museum. It was constructed in 1880 and had models of farm implements and machinery, specimens of farm products, and samples of Tennessee soils and fertilizers. Later, when the Hesler Biology Building opened in 1935, a small room on the upper floor became a place for storing zoological specimens, including butterflies, birds, and a Florida alligator.

The McClung Museum is the University of Tennessee's natural history museum and culture center. The McClung Museum is home to exhibits of regional, national, and international significance, as well as collections of art, archaeology, and history. The McClung Museum also offers educational programming for all ages.

The museum offers exhibits, programs, and research opportunities for all ages. Permanent exhibits at the McClung Museum include the Ancient Life Gallery, which features fossils from around the world, the Electricity Gallery, which highlights the role of electricity in our lives, and the McClung Museum Store.

The McClung Museum has a variety of exhibits, from art and cultural objects from around the world to decorative arts from America and Europe to photography from travelers. Plus, they have a nice selection of ancient Roman artifacts, Native American art, and local memorabilia.
